February 16, 2021, a ripple spread around the waters of Captiva and Sanibel, as islanders heard the news of the transference of ownership of Jensen’s Twin Palm Resort and Marina. The historic cottages and marina were known as the last bastion of old Captiva, and had the Jensen family’s steadfast protection of that institution.

That ripple soon became a tidal wave as, only four days after the sale of the family business, word spread of the unexpected death of Dave Jensen. The eldest of the Jensen “boys” had moved to Italy in 2019, yet his hearty laugh, larger-than-life personality and community good works seemed to remain on Captiva.

Like many of you, we at the Captiva Island Historical Society mourned for Dave’s wife Queenie, for the Jensen family, and also for our island community. In our grief we pondered, “What can we do now?”

In commemoration of Dave, and recognizing the Jensens having been a colorful part of Captiva’s history for over 45 years, the Captiva Island Historical Society has begun production of a feature-length documentary chronicling Twin Palm, the contribution the Jensens have made to Captiva, and the many ways Dave will remain in our memories. This documentary will premiere sometime in March 2024.

As co-founder of the Captiva Island Historical Society, Dave remained an active Director on our Board, even after relocating to Italy.

This dedication came as no surprise to those who knew him. Dave not only loved his community, he championed Captiva history. The Jensens have personally contributed to the Captiva Island Historical Society each year since our beginning in 2010.

Of all the island organizations, it’s natural the CIHS lead this tribute to the Jensen family and commemoration of Dave. With this in mind, the CIHS established the Dave Jensen Memorial Fund. Contributions to the fund will firstly underwrite production of our feature-length documentary.
